Jeff,
If you buy parts from Digi-key, they will send out an e-mail telling you that a part has become obsolete. We have found them to be accurate about 90% of the time. Occasionally they send a notice if they are dropping a line, telling you that a part is obsolete but it is still available from other distributors.
By the way, have you run into an co-op EE student named Jennifer Smith yet? She's my daughter. Don't be too mean to her. ;>)
My regards,
Steve Smith

Subject: [TN] Obsolete Part Cross-reference Resource
To all -
Long term production, 3 or more years with the same product, is a new thing for us. It is presenting us with some new challenges, the latest one is part obsolescence. We are doing small batch assembly (50-1000 units) with each batch being built contract, and lags of several weeks to several months between builds. This makes stocking more parts than needed for the current contracts unproductive and costly. Is there a good service for identifying parts that are/will be obsolete and cross reference to active part numbers?
