I've uploaded some pictures here:

http://ipc-technet.groupsite.com/gallery/13697

These are solder sleeves, and I'm wondering if they're rejectable per J-STD-001 Rev. E para. 5.1.2 (for Class 3), which now says:

"There shall [A1D2D3] be no strand separation (birdcaging) greater than one strand diameter or beyond the outside diameter of the insulation."

I've always considered birdcaging to be strands that are separated out and away from the other strands, leaving an air gap, like we see in the pictures in IPC-A-610. But in this case, these strands are separated at an angle radially with respect to the lay of the other strands.

Now 610E has a defect for "The general spiral lay of the strands has not been maintained", but there isn't anything similar in J-1.

I'm probably on shaky ground here because I don't really understand why birdcaging is a defect in the first place. Does it lead to early fatigue failure in the wire? And if that's the reason, would we see the same problem with the condition in these pictures? Should we care whether all strands run parallel?

-Joe
