Have a look at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31045261/ -- make sure that
you look at the complete file, as the hidden part answers your questions
regarding the use of composite materials in the fuselage.

Note that it says that commercial aircraft are hit once a year, on
average, so this is not that unusual, albeit impressive.

I would have thought that a takeoff in the middle of a storm was rather
foolhardy.

I have been in two situations which have been hairy. The first was in
1952 when a York aircraft lost power from two engines (out of four) over
Corsica, including one which caught fire. We just made it to Malta and
landed with the full escort of fire engines and ambulances; we had about
50 feet of altitude as we approached the runway! No second chance!

The other one was in a Cessna twin-engine, when we were flying at the
ceiling altitude of 12,500 feet between two cumulonimbus systems, and a
third one suddenly appeared before us, impossible to avoid. We had hail
and lightning galore around us, as well as being tossed around in the
updraught, which took us even higher. That was scary!
