The MIL-A-28870 connection system is modular using MIL-C-28859 components - individual press-fit contacts with a molded insulator that is secondarily installed.  The entire connection system was developed by Naval Avionics Facility, Indianapolis WAY back, and was thus termed the "NAFI" connector.  The modularity allows for infinite configurations of pin counts or arrays.  It is still widely used on hi-rel military backplanes with high pin counts for severe environments.

I'm not sure I'm understanding the q 100%. We install pressfit connectors 
with hundreds of pins by means of a machine that operates partly with air 
pressure.
