As a kid, I saw my grandfather mixing with his radio from 1935.  All wires 
were cotton spun. He heated the solder iron in the wood stove, took it out, 
dipped the tip in salmiac, put some butterlike flux on the parts and 
soldered them together. I  can still see the enormous cloud, hear the hisss 
and imagine the smell. That started my interest in electronics. Many  years 
later, I had a present for him. At older days he could still not leave the 
radio to a modern serviceman. I gave him a wooden spool with Multicore and a 
electric iron.  Not much in money, but he appreciated it much.
