We have made it through multiple A2LA ISO-17025 accreditations using Metcal Smart Heat, with NO temperature verifications or calibration.

The heater temperature is set by the atomic structure of the heater material. It cannot be adjusted, and does not require any adjustment, as it self-destructs before the drift is significant.

The assessors are now familiar with them, so usually there aren't questions. However, if needed, the argument is that if you calibrate them it shows ignorance to the meaning of calibration.
Furthermore, the metrology of verification is cost prohibitive and likely destructive, because the proper trace to temperature is intrinsically derived from the atomic structure.

If the ABs wanted to call our bluff, they would require such tips to be in the ISO 17011/Guide 34 "Reference Material" loop. As far as I know, the international MLAs have not required this yet.

One problem that you may run across is that the DoD cannot on their own choose to adopt the ISO system. But from our perspective, they usually recognize.

The rework simulation task group at IPC took a kinda sneaky route. Planning to use the "well recognized test method" path, we called out the part number "series" of the tip cartridges, without giving tolerances for temperature, hence for that method - no tolerances to verify.

What is not controlled with the system is the tip cartridge mass and the thermal impedance of the solder bridge to the joint that you're trying to create, and the parts your trying not to destroy.

Subject: Re: [TN] Solder iron tips calibration

Hi Dominic,

We just recently went thru a review of our internal calibration documents and settled on a 6 month interval. As others have said, you may need to shorten the duration based on results.

I am curious why you are specific about the tips only, and not the entire unit? All of the controls and calculations are done from the element to the base, the tip is only a small, but important, piece of the entire unit.

Also, depending how involved you want to get, we use Hakko's FG-101 model for verification. It also allows you to check tip voltage potential and tip to ground resistance. These are important if you have ESD concerns.

Best Regards,
Jeff

Subject: [TN] Solder iron tips calibration

Hello Technetters, we are presently reviewing our internal procedure for the solder iron calibration. One step of that procedure consists to validate the solder iron tips by measuring the temperature of the tip using a thermometer ( like the Hakko 191). The procedure asks to do the calibration each week or on each tip substitution for all solder irons.

I'm not sure where these requirements came, but I would like to know if you think it is necessary to calibrate the solder iron tips (I'm not talking about the calibration of the iron itself) . If yes, what would be the the calibration frequency recommended?
