For what it's worth, the long-since-cancelled MIL-STD-2000 called
for testing every three months. We test every six months.
Weekly testing seems like overkill, unless your irons are failing these
tests.

Subject: Re: [TN] Solder iron tips calibration

We do not test the iron each time a tip is changed for another one or a new one. Each soldering iron manufacture can provide some information on their data sheet or contact their rep. The frequency should be based on past data. Like anything you cal, you see if you can extend, but be prepared to shorten when necessary. I know that sound simple but depending on your customer(s) contracts and how many you have to test has to be considered. Currently we have ours checked and calibrated once a year using an outside national contracted Calibration service. We find the soldering irons today are very reliable and stable compared to ones in the 80s and back in time. Lowest cycle we have used was every three months when we used the older style irons. Jon

Subject: [TN] Solder iron tips calibration

Hello Technetters, we are presently reviewing our internal procedure for the solder iron calibration. One step of that procedure consists to validate the solder iron tips by measuring the temperature of the tip using a thermometer ( like the Hakko 191). The procedure asks to do the calibration each week or on each tip substitution for all solder irons.

I'm not sure where these requirements came, but I would like to know if you think it is necessary to calibrate the solder iron tips (I'm not talking about the calibration of the iron itself) . If yes, what would be the the calibration frequency recommended?
