As a lurker rather than a contributor I don't speak up much but this thread
has brought back many fond memories. :-)
You just described our back porch when I was a child.... My stepdad used to
have what looked like a darkroom studio with various "pans" for etching and
rinsing, along with stacks of blanks and sharpies... I was fascinated...
Except for the smell... I remember not being too fond of that... I think
shortly thereafter I got my first "101 electronics experiments" kits....
there were some 8 track tapes and leaded gas in the family car at time too
:-) Sorry to ramble but very fond memories (especially for a little girl in
what sure seemed at the time to be a mans world...) Thanks for helping me
indulge in a pleasant trip through the way-back machine. :-)
Thanks,
Dharma

I used to use sharpie for etch-resist and ferric chloride over radio-shack
fr-4 blanks...i was also using leaded gas and 8-track tapes at the time I
think...but its a great way to see boards happen for hobby applications. I
used pass-through wires instead of plated through holes, but eyelets are
more professional. You can get some pretty complex stuff down this way
easier and cleaner than breadboards...and just plain cool.

John,

I am not based in California, I am in Kentucky. I would be dealing with
line/spacing of about 10mils. I am just wanting to make small to medium
sized boards for hobbyist projects. Most of the boards would be single
sided, maybe a few double sided.

I had read about heating up the ferric acid to make the etching process
faster, but after just coming out of a chemistry class, I didn't like the
approach!!! If it takes 30mins, then it will have to take 30mins, I can
wait!!!

I have used a couple of previous mentioned board houses, but it cost more
money after tooling costs to than it would have just to get a setup for
making small boards at home. But, if I do decide to make it a professional
grade board, then I will fork out the money and have it fabricated
elsewhere.

Thanks for all the info.

Toby
