Denny,
Thanks for answering, you are the first so far.

You forgot you can't attach things to TechNet messages. Send the white
paper to me directly, please.

Our boards have been halogen free for years, but it had nothing to do with
environmental considerations.

Do all epoxies by definition have to contain bisphenol A?

Bev

Subject: Re: [TN] Halogen free laminate chemistry

I think all halogen free laminates are tetra-bromo-bisphenol-A free.
However, bisphenol-A is the co-momomer for epoxy, so if they are FR-4
(epoxy) they must still contain bisphenol-A. I think for flammability (pass
UL 94-V0) the additives are aluminum oxide, nitrogen or phosphorus
containing organics, etc.

I have attached the original IPC white paper on halogen free from 2002. I
understand a lot of this was "voted down", as IPC wanted to take a different
stance toward halogen free for Intel, Dell, HP, and others - who supply
computers graded to the E-Peat scale, where halogen free is a major
objective.

Is RIM now into making "my hand-held is greener than your hand-held"
products? I guess my view that "halogen-free is bad science" attitude is
showing through.

Denny
