We use Metcals with 700F tips but have gone for MX5000 units with the P
suffix tips for the 'difficult' jobs or for PIH rework. 
I feel that thermal resistance from the heating element is far more
important than tip temperature. There is a tendency to crank up the tip
temperature to overcome a thermal resistance that is too large. Cranking
up the temperature means that you can thermally overstress small
components.

If you use Metcal irons swap the 600F tips you normally use for SnPb for
700F types and you won't go far wrong.
