Inge,
All the major board manufacturers can supply halogen free boards.  They
add phosphorus compounds and aluminum hydroxide as flame retardants.
But the latter starts to decompose at reflow temperatures, so personally
I think this is crazy, but they do it because it is cheap.  I don't
think much of the current crop of halogen free board materials, as I
said - too brittle.

Halogen free? How's that possible? How do you cure epoxy without hanging
on 
those brom xxx moleculls? And Brom is used as a flame retardant. Have I
been 
sleeping.  Where can you buy such boards? I have obviously missed
something 
very important, despite I try to keep informed.
