This subject brings up an interesting story about the invention of electroplating.
Seems that before electroplating, gold was "plated" on to metals by dissolving it in Mercury, and wiped on to the part to be plated.   The part was then baked to evaporate the Mercury...
Clearly, OSHA was not yet even a glint in the government's eye....
This method was causing all the "platers" to die off rapidly.   So, somebody developed gold plating, to minimize the death rate of the platers!
