Type OR fluxes are water soluble. Any residues
must be completely removed, because even the low-activity
formulations ORL0 and ORL1 are reactive. They will break
down in the presence of moisture, causing current leakage,
electromigration and dendritic growth, possible corrosion,
and separation of overlying conformal coat.

And mixing a water-soluble residue with rosin is definitely
not recommended. ROL0 residues are harder to clean, especially
with time, but they are benign in many service environments.
That is, they are benign unless you mix them with residues that
are water-soluble, which creates a reactive residue that's
hard to clean.

Subject: [TN] What exactly is Organic Flux?

Hello all, I've been able to find quite a bit of information on Rosin and Resin type fluxes but not much on Organic fluxes. Can anyone tell me what Organic flux is made up of and how it may differ - particularly in the areas of board reliability - from Rosin flux?
Further, I understand that it is not advisable to use two different types of fluxes in one operation as their different chemistries may be incompatible, yet we've been suggested the use of an ORL0 flux along with a ROL0 flux-cored solder. Do Organic and Rosin fluxes share any similarities?

Thanks in advance,

Julien Meyer
