Guy and Bev,

Thanks for your prompt reply. As mentioned I know nothing about the required specifications for the X-ray machine used for PCBA inspection. Is 2D good enough for BGAs, LGAs, QFNs or I need a 3D? As for cost, I am not sure, can we have one between $100 - $250K (Singapore Dollars)?

I do not think my country, Singapore required company to register their X-ray machine. However, I have heard that whoever operate the X-ray machine must have a licence to do so and must wear a dosimeter to detect any possible leakage during operation.

That is the reason why my company chief safety officer has indicated that we need to purchase the dosimeter should we need to use the X-ray machine at our vendor's facility.

Thanks and Regards,
~ Wee Mei ~

Guy,
Good points. Those same details apply to the province of Ontario and I
expect they apply to most other states and provinces in our two
countries.

We operate our X-ray equipment under regulations issued by the
Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania. We are not require to wear dosimeters. The instrument
is
registered with the state and must be tested for leakage its surfaces
and
seals. We are also require to have a safety training program and
radiation
safety officer.

Subject: [TN] Personal radiation device for X-ray machine

Hello,

I have to say here that I have completely no knowledge in X-ray machine
for
PCBA but has been tasked to (1) evaluate and with intention to purchase
a
suitable X-ray machine for this application and (2) purchase personal
radiation monitoring device.

My immediate task is item (2) as we will be using a contractor's X-ray
to
carry out X-ray for some of the PCBAs mounted with BGAs and LGAs very
soon.
I need to purchase this so-called dosimeter ASAP. I am given a
particular
brand and told to get either one of the models. As I stared down on the
specifications between the different models, I am lost in their
translations, what energy range, dose rate, etc, etc. I surfed the
internet
to understand more but came face to face with so many literature and
brands
that I am "drown" in them. Ignorant I may be, I am sure those
specifications
stated in the dosimeter data sheet has to do with the brand or type of
X-ray
machine that I use at the contractor's facility or that I am going to
purchase.

I really hope some kind souls out there can help me to have some basic
understanding in how I should select the correct dosimeter for my
application. I am looking at one that can be wore around the neck (for
both
genders) or clip on breast pocket for male.

Thanks and Regards,
~ Wee Mei ~
