Hi Richard,

That's exactly what we did in the case relating to the picture I posted to
narrow it down to a certain date code connector from AMP. Further purchases
of the connector from distribution had the condition that it wasn't from the
bad date code. As you might guess, AMP didn't step up to the plate and offer
much...

If it's a real bad case of co deposition you can tell with a microscope
and solder iron.

Just touch the tip with a solder iron and watch the melt front as it
progress up the lead. In some instances I have see little volcanoes of
dark material ~exploding to the surface.

Hi Joe - is the surface finish bright acid tin? Sometimes the organic
brighteners in some tin formulations, especially bright acid tin, are
codeposited and result in weird topography and/or solderability issues
during solder processing. The "bumpy" connector picture Steve posted
looked like an example of a codeposited brightener problem.

Not blumpy exactly. I don't have a soft copy of this document, so I'm
trying to get a good scan.

Subject: [TN] Orange Peel Termination Finish

One of our guys brought over a counterfeit parts manual with a picture
of
some component leads exhibiting a rough orange-peel texture. The
picture
was presented as evidence of re-tinning, which could indicate a
counterfeit part.

The question is what could cause orange peel finish after hot solder
dip?
We perform a lot of hot solder dip, both in-house and outside, and
neither
of us could remember the last time we saw anything like this, though it
does look kind of familiar.

In the picture, we could see no obvious patches of de-wetting or
non-wetting, just a uniform pebbly surface. I don't think this would be

caused by a solderability problem, or rapid cooling, could it be too
little immersion time in the hot solder? Could the solder in the pot be

contaminated with something like copper, gold, or iron?

-Joe
