I rarely had trouble with part numbers from 2 customers being the same.
It was possible to have the same capictor specification purchased form 3
different suppliers becasue of the customers APL and they could not be used
interchangeably.

The part number system has to be able to deal with the consigned and
purchased material. There must be a way to aggragate componet orders for
better pricing.

There muat be an easy way to cross your internal numbers with the customers
niumbers. All the calls to the customer and emergancy EC's from them will be
with thier part numbers. Your production floor will use your numbers when
you implement the EC..

A good data base system reduces the need for the smart numbering systems by
having excellent search functions. Poor naming conventions and data entry
can negate this feature as well.

As long the customer owns the design they have to support the BOM. When it
is neglected then the customer can lose control of the product.
