We call it whatever the customer calls it. Which drives me crazy some times as it means reviewing at least two documents to figure out what something is, but hey - the customer is always right.
The other reason it drives me crazy is that we can and do have the same part, such as a D55342K07100DP resistor, filed in 4 or 5 places under different customer p/n depending on which customer they were bought for. But the inventory may be customer owned, in which case we have to keep it apart no matter what part number is on it.

My preference is to use the manufacturer's part number where possible. This works unless there are a lot of alternates on the bill of materials (at least with our MRP system).

regards,

Subject: [TN] Poll: EMS Part numbering systems

We are an EMS provider in the midst of implementing a new ERP system. We currently have an internal part numbering system with our legacy system which is semi-intelligent (ie. certain number ranges define certain component types). We are considering the option of using customer part numbers in place of our internal part numbers.

I checked the archives and there is a thread from 1999 on part numbering systems but they seemed more toward and OEM/OEM's point of view.

What do other EMS providers out there use in terms of part numbers? Internal or Customer?

Thanks
Peter
