Peter,

I probably spent a good hunk of my life dealing with these items over the
last decade. Some Points:

1. Who provides the "Approved Vendor List? Is it defined in house or by the
customer? To what degree will you substitute parts? Does you business plan
include producing revenue on part purchases?

2. Will you supply information back to the customer about what you are using
and is that info in terms of their part numbers?

3. Will you be interfacing with Engineering, Purchasing or both? How well
does each group, at each customer, organize and maintain their data? My
experience says MOST customers do a terrible job.

4. To what level do you want to do data transfers or simply "Re-Type" the
BOMs into your system?

In general, and you probably will not like the answer, you need to keep your
own part numbers and the customer part numbers. You will almost end up with
a copy of the customer database which is tied to your own database. Also,
add into the links your own Approved Vendor List for a specific part.

The more of the "Database Cross Referencing Functions" you can provide the
better service you will be providing your customer.

"Semi Intelligent" part numbering systems always seems to end up on the
short side of intelligent. There are simply so many types of components that
even with a single brilliant person doing the part number creation the parts
numbers get messed up. If multiple "Not Fully Brilliant" folks generate part
numbers it becomes a big mess faster.

The reason folks use "Functional" part numbers is because most tools lack
good "Find" functions. A big list of sequential part numbers is all most
folks get and "Functional" part numbers are the only tool they have.

My suggestion is IF you have good search tools in your applications then go
with 10 digit random (but unique) part numbers and totally forget the
functional name approach.

Here are some examples of some custom code I use:

These show links to Digikey Numbers through I have my own numbers, vendor
and manufacturer number behind the screens.

If you need someone to help setup a system let me know, I am always looking
for work!

Thanks,

Bob Kondner

Subject: [TN] Poll: EMS Part numbering systems

We are an EMS provider in the midst of implementing a new ERP system. We
currently have an internal part numbering system with our legacy system
which is semi-intelligent (ie. certain number ranges define certain
component types). We are considering the option of using customer part
numbers in place of our internal part numbers.

I checked the archives and there is a thread from 1999 on part numbering
systems but they seemed more toward and OEM/OEM's point of view.

What do other EMS providers out there use in terms of part numbers?
Internal or Customer?

Thanks

Peter
