The only common parts have virtually zero value.
We use the customer's part number if it exists, if it doesn't conflict
with any current numbers and it is a reasonable length (just got a new
customer with a 25 digit part number, so your desk has a part number in
my customer's system)
If not we use a 3 digit code to represent a product and a four digit
code to represent the component issued on a first come first served
basis.
The ability of modern systems to do fuzzy searches for alternate
components that might be held under another number defeats the argument
for common part numbers, in my view. :-)

Rex

Subject: [TN] Poll: EMS Part numbering systems

We are an EMS provider in the midst of implementing a new ERP system.
We currently have an internal part numbering system with our legacy
system which is semi-intelligent (ie. certain number ranges define
certain component types). We are considering the option of using
customer part numbers in place of our internal part numbers.

I checked the archives and there is a thread from 1999 on part numbering
systems but they seemed more toward and OEM/OEM's point of view.

What do other EMS providers out there use in terms of part numbers?
Internal or Customer?

Thanks
Peter
