Suggest you consult IPC 7711/7721 for rework guidance. That did not change such things as solder iron tip temperatures when moving from reworking eutectic solder joints to lead-free solder joints.

Will you always know the solder on the board you are reworking? Are you standizing on ONE lead-free solder, with known date codes so operators can tell if they are reworking Pb based or lead-free solder? Those are mixed solder technology issues and that rework is best discussed off-line. Department of Defense is facing those problems with more and more COTS assemblies being used all the time.

Subject: [TN] LEAD FREE REWORK QUESTION

Good morning to all, I recently purchased a Lead Free Training
aterials. I was asked to provide lead free training to a very small
umber of operators. During the presentation of that purchased training
aterial it stated in order to rework a solder connection, you remove
he solder and component. Then you reinstall and solder (called
emanufactured). Is that the best way and if so why? Maybe Werner
ill know and any of you that are doing lead free soldering and have to
ework. Doing our design stage (IR&D) for new products we are going
oward lead free and engineering needs parts changed or add mod wires
rior to qual testing). Thanks, Jon
