 Hi Inge,
The higher the P-concentration at the interface, the weaker the interface. There is no threshold value I know of—this is why things get worse with multiple soldering operations.

From all   I have seen, the P does not get into the IMCs—it simply concentrates at the   IMC/Ni interface as the Ni disolves in Sn—there is actually a name for this:   "Black Pad." ;-)

 No, they form some nice   crystalline plateletts, just like AgSn and 
AuSn-IMCs and just like   them lead to solder embrittlement in sufficient 
concentration. I will   be publishing a column on it in Global SMT & 
Packaging in about   May or   June.
