On the Wednesday Whiskers Forum a year ago, one of our listeners said "I just built a whiskers inspection system for $40." We all were amazed - but he shared the info. Here from e-bay is the digital microscope camera with built in lighting from Hong Kong (now $35, but they increased shipping to $20):

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-3MP-Video-Cam-908M-NEW-VGA-25-400X-Digital-Microscope_W0QQitemZ270521001945QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3efc4ee7d9

So, I zipped off my payment info to E-bay, and in a week, we had a "digital microscope camera". However, we really struggled with moving by hand or fixing the little stand and moving the board. We ended up mounting the camera to the front of our regular binocular Fisher microscope to supplement the digital camera on there.
Believe me, nothing moves in X, Y, directions and up/down with the base stablity of a microsocpe.

The computer in the lab records the pictures from a little software program - included. Ours came with a USB port from the camera, and I think goes to 400X. Our microscope max objective is only 250X. But, you would have to set up your own software program to measure things - based on some "golden standard" of distance, like a reticle.

I will send a picture to Steve to post on his web site. Remember, this is the "patent pending, high technology, Purdue student inspired" el-cheapo.

Subject: [TN] Inspection Systems

Esteemed Forum -
Do any of you have input as to a great, but cheap, visual inspection system?
I need a system that can easily inspect, from 10X to 150X, with the capability
f also taking pictures. If it has the ability to measure inspection areas,
nd/or the ability to measure solder paste height, that would be great - but
t's not required. I've combed the archived forums for input, but all of the
ecommendations I found were at least a few years old already.
And, let me repeat, it must be as cheap as cheap can be.
I found this - and it certainly fits the "cheap" requirement. Anybody have
xperience with this sort of device that they wouldn't mind sharing?

 look forward to your input.
