Looks like the glass encapsulation does not extend over the end of the
package.

Just finished wave soldering a bunch of boards tonight, and got a chance to

Looks like solder to me. Have you taken a solder iron to it and see if it
liquifies? Don't know how that would happen, and really don't know if that
is going to be a problem with the lead to glass seal. Doesn't look right to
me...

  Two different surfaces were found on Fairchild glass diode (1N4148), one
end is the regular shiny surface while the other end is a flat, rough
surface. Later please see pictures for details.

   

  What is the rough surface? How is it formed? Does it functionally affect
the performance and reliability?  

   

  I guess it's formed during molding, but not sure. I send the pictures to
Fairchild but they want some parts back to analyze before tell what it is.
Anyone saw this before? Thanks.
