I gave up on connector cleaners (have not tried the deoxit products or MG Chemicals) as the problem they supposedly solved returned.

We had an oxidation (intermittant connection) problem on Molex power connectors (which are tin plated). I called Molex. They recommended a product called Nyogel 760G lubricant. http://www.nyelubricants.com/ The auto and golf cart industry uses it and so does the military.

We got a 2 oz tube (it's not cheap but it lasts a long time as you don't need much of it). We tried it on many different connectors, my HP calculator (the gold connections to the battery had turned green) and a flashlight that was intermittant. All were fixed within seconds. The wiping action of mating the connectors did the cleaning but when it didn't (as was the case with the flashlight and my HP calculator, dabbing some on a Q-tip then using the tip to scrub the connector did the trick.

I had some reservations about greasing connectors (dust accumulation) but when I read an article on using it on Navy aircraft, I was convinced it was worth trying in the field. So I sent a 2 oz tube to my customer; the problem disappeared. What we thought was an electronics problem in the power supply (or external applied 12Vdc power) was simply oxidation or airborne corrosion (the application was at an airport).

Check out the Aviation/Aerospace Industry articles

I have recommended it to others and the results are the same. This stuff is incredible.

Price varies a lot - use Google to find the lowest cost distributor.

Never really knew. We developed the chemical cleaning into a process after out 6 Sigma black belt "guru" validated it for production and refurbishment use. Fortunately, the VP of Engineering reviewed it and went along with my and my Quality guy's objections that the test criteria were way too subjective and it wasn't sufficiently proven.
Amazingly, the problem then seemed to go away. A few months later, our repair/refurb supervisor disclosed he'd begun using the eraser to clean the edge connectors of the tuner cards and simply not tell anyone. Even the extensive FA we had done be a very reputable lab, never really defined the problem.

We still have units reach our field reps that tested fine before shipping, but don't boot up. They remove the cover and reseat the tuner card and memory sticks on the mother board and everything works perfectly for the two to five years the meter is in a home. Go figure.

How much gold was removed after each cleaning with the 'ol pencil eraser?
How was the residue remove from the card/board?
Did it cure the issue?

About three years back, we went through an extensive testing process of all the commercial cleaners out there, including having FA performed on samples due to what appeared to be connector fretting on our meters.
None worked easily and even the best required extensive scrubbing and cleaning. We finally settled on Chester's solution, the good 'ol pencil eraser in stick form, and the problem was solved.

Hi All,
In market what is the most common and good contact cleaner used? To ensure better, reliable and long term contact. Thanks.
