Well, NEMA seems to think it's possible to do such a law. I'd love to hear a NEMA spokesperson explain their logic to us.

addressing 2 points:
the electrical problems in the LA times article refer to the lack of a "braking wins" programming, not any physical failure. Had they done that, it wouldn't matter if the floor mat, or even a confused right foot was pressing the accelerator. I suppose a desgined in defect is worse....
As for the US passing "lead required" laws - not so easy. Imagine what your company would have to go through if they were required to use lead in US bound products and required to not use lead in EU products. It wouldn't stop the EU unless companies decided to just stop selling in Europe. An agreement would have to be reached first, and the EU is not going to let go of the US'
spheroid nether regions so easily, now that they've got us by them.
