The EU have always stated that the validity of the lead in solders ban will
be decided by the European court.

Until now there has never been such a challenge. Obviously if there is found
to be safety critical issues resulting from this legislation there will
indeed be moves to roll it back in an EU court setting.

Personally my belief is that there are answers to all of the speculation but
those answers are being held by NASA under strict confidentiality agreements
with the companies contacting them on issues due to lead free solders.

Of course if the lead in solder ban IS ever challenged in the courts then of
course such data will be the subject of a court subpoena.

I think that tin whiskers are a plausible avenue to travel. I have seen
them so numerous and long enough to wave like a shimmering field of wheat
under a strong light. I just haven't seen them in the Toyota products. I
am not privy to that investigation nor do I expect to be. Until someone has
at least a decently focused photo or two of a tin whisker we should give
them the benefit of reasonable doubt in this case. Personally if the answer
is tin whiskers, I would welcome another chance that we might roll back
lead-free in electronics entirely. Until there are, there are other
plausible answers also.

cheers,
chuck...

"You will not apply my precept," he said, shaking his head. "How often
have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever
remains, however improbable, must be the truth? We know that he did not come
through the door, the window, or the chimney.
We also know that he could not have been concealed in the room, as there is
no concealment possible. When, then, did he come?"
The Sign of the Four, ch. 6 (1890)
Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of the Four (Doubleday p. 111)

Sherlock's deductive way of solving mysteries is the way I have approached
many technical problems in my professional life. It has been of great help
to me in the many products I have invented.

If we cannot discuss the possibility of
whisker or lead-free connection failure
being the root cause, then where, pray tell me, can it be discussed? Where
else ought there to be an intelligent, knowledgeable, articulate, group of
people who understand the phenomenon?

Please remember that when I first posted on the subject, I mentioned that it
was reported to me that new autos were arriving at dealers (a few) that
would not start.
Where did I learn that? From NASA.

NASA gets many reports but only a few
can be shared with the public. They must accept reports that must remain
confidential.

As I also said, how many if you work at companies who would never let be
made public tin whisker or lead-free defects in their products? Why then is
it so different for Toyota or Ford or ... to insist the problem is a) the
customers fault or b) there is no fault with the product?

If we here do not consider/ discuss the
possibility, who will?

I've been off line since last evening as here in New Hampshire we had a very
violent wind/rain storm which knocked out power, phone and Internet. My
cellphone still works, and we have a generator for critical loads. Do not
know when power will be restored as there still is a tree laying across the
lines, and blocking the street.

Sincerely,

Bob Landman
