I can't speak for anyone else, but I'll answer your question with another
"why" question; why was the electronic industry forced to switch from a
reliable, well known and proven solder alloy, to an alloy that has not yet
been proven to be as reliable, is more costly and difficult to process, and
a bigger threat to the environment?
In that question may be the motivation...
