I cant imagine doing this in volume without pick and place/carrier
tape...
We place a number of these in 2 sizes (dubbed by our operators as the
dog house and puppy house). Our biggest issue has been with the lead
wire (5 mil wire I think) deforming in the carrier tape causing the
lead to be unsolder after placement and reflow. We worked with the
manufacturer (piconics) to increase the wall thickness of the carrier
tape and the problem seemed to go away. At this point our biggest
issue is getting the adhesive to not flow on the pads, but we use a
loctite chipbonder rather than the epotek material recommended per our
customer. The surface tension of the chipbonder causes it to flow out
rather than set up and attach to the coil like the epotek should.
It's not much info, but hopefully it helps.
