Hi Steve,
Thank you for posting the pics on your web.
You are right that this is a Samtec connector and the gold plating is 20u"
over a 50 u"-Nickel. They don't have any data about the embrittlement as
this is a customer made part. The matte-tin tail or lead-tin tail is not
available due to the tiny size of the metal contact when I asked them.
We will perform a analysis later after the currently urgent build. I don't
feel it will cause the embrittlement problem but we have to tin it for this
build.
Thank you so much for your help.
Regards,
Dave He

Hi David,
First I want to apologize for not getting your photo up sooner. I usually
have responded to my fellow technetters sooner than this. I've been under
the weather so to speak for the last week. I've got some sort of cold or
something. Anyways, here's your connector:

I feel your pain. I've been through the same drill with another connector
with similar pitch trying to comply with the gold removal statement in the
J-STD with no success. Here was the connector I was trying to deal with
AFTER I got it back from Corfin who probably is one of the best tinning
companies in the business. They no-bid the job:

My connector was a Samtec connector, I don't know who makes yours. If I
remember the statement in the J-STD correctly, you don't have to worry about
gold removal for SMT components if there is objective evidence that there
isn't any gold embrittlement issues. I wondered what exactly that meant,
cross-sections and SEM studies on the solder joints and having that
information retained somewhere so that we could present that? I was working
for an EMS company that didn't have the lab, engineering, resources, or time
to do that. I called Samtec and asked them if they ever had any issues with
gold embrittlement issues with the connector using standard SMT processes,
and of course they said no. So I left it at that and we built the boards.
I'm not saying that your connector can't be tinned, but I wish you good
luck. I don't know why they plate the leads with gold. It's probably easier
for them to manufacture them by plating the contacts and the leads with gold
all at once, and then leave up to guys like you and me to put them on the
board and comply with industry standards.
Steve
