It's been many years since I have dealt with Sealbrite. When I did see
Sealbrite in use, it was on single sided and some simple double sided
boards, what we used to refer to as "punch and crunch". This was the
solvent based system. It was a messy process, but effective and VERY LOW
cost. The principle was the rosin was activated by heat and aided the
soldering process. As I recall this process was not compatible with
aqueous (organic acid) flux. The last time I saw it in use, no clean
fluxes hadn't even been introduced to the market. Without knowing what
other components are contained in the current Sealbrite, it would be
difficult to predict what the effect would be on long term reliability.

I would bet the current version of Sealbrite is an aqueous system if it is
still in use today. I contacted a friend at Enthone and he didn't have any
info on this product. I'm not sure who is selling it now.

Re: [TN] Someone knows SEAL BRITE COATING?

Hello Bob,

Some of low-end pcb fab shops still apply seal brite coating on
single-side power pcb board. Is it a bit cost effective than new
generation OSP?

What's the long-term reliability and ionic cleanness of seal brite coating
compared with new generation OSP? Thank you.

Best Regards
Charming Chan

I would be surprised if this product is still available, especially in
t's original form. As others previously stated, it was rosin in solvent.
he problem with the original product is it required either solvent or
emi-aqueous cleaning after soldering. In today's world of no clean
luxes, this product would not work. Perhaps they have formulated a no
lean version.

 blast from the past.
ealbrite was a Lonco product, a solution of rosin in solvent that was
ffectively a simple varnish. Air or oven dried. Worked OK.
Alpha Metals had equivalent products Alpha [2301 2302 etc] which aped it
easonably well. What happened when everything, including Enthone and
heir
roducts, became Cookson I don't know. Most likely these simple materials
ere let go in favour of Enthone's modern OSPs.
