Ken,
I have just gone through the same thing. We used to use a deox powder
that was extremely dirty and hazardous (using full face masks with OV
filters). When we went to Apex in 09 we saw a product called MS2 dross
eliminator from P. Kay Metal. The product is meant to be left in your
solder pot all the time to create a "blanket" over the solder and
capture dross immediately. However, it requires daily maintenance and
replenishment. Due to our low volume of wave soldering we decided to
use it as a dross removal tool. We let the dross accumulate and then
put 3L of this stuff in the pot on top of all the dross, mix it in and
scoop it out. It works like a dream. We have no hazardous fumes (air
quality tests pending) and the process is very clean because it's a
liquid (like syrup) rather than a powder, so no dust, it's like removing
chocolate sponge cake from the solder pot. We also remove 66% less
dross (in weight) than the previous method, thus saving in solder usage.
The product is not cheap but the savings in solder out weigh the cost,
especially with SAC 305.

Hope that helps.

Subject: [TN] Solder-Dross Seperation

We are looking at a better way to recover solder from our dross. We
currently use a roto rooter sort of device at the pot and it is kind of
a
dirty process and time consuming. We are concerned about the amount of
dross
dust it kicks up during the process. We are well vented but still
concerned.
It does a good job of recovery but there's got to be something better.

Any suggestions out there on what you like and don't like?

Reply to me directly if you don't feel comfortable mentioning
manufacturer's
names on the TechNet.

Thanks,

KennyB
