 Hi Victor,
The article's title is: 'Failure Definition—Not As Easy As It Sounds" and directly relates to the issue of a partial crack in a gull-wing-type lead solder joint.
I also have attached a column on failure detection. I guess it is time ti write a column on these 'HA/HA's [HALT, HASS, etc.], and when they can and cannot do.

Werner,

What is the article name/search criteria?

Hi Victor,
This is one of the problems with HALT—it is so severe and unconnected to realuse conditions, that you can get failure indications that are not pertinent tothe reliability of your product. You really should have used IPC-9701.
Now you do not know whether or not you have a problem. In terms of partialcracks and failure definition, you may want to ookl at my column in the Januaryissue of Global SMT & Packaging.

Werner

Fellow TechNetters:

What is IPC position on a solder joint fracture on a gull wing

connection. What percentage of fracture on the IMC region and/or bulk

solder is permissible? Post Reliability, HALT.

Victor,
