Hi Terry - yes, plasma works well at stripping oxides but it also can go
after a number of other materials too if the process is not tuned
correctly. ROSA electrochemically converts only the oxide and leaves the
rest of the assembly/component alone. Too bad Mother Nature does not like
a non-oxidized metallic surface!

I would agree that ROSA would be effective for only a couple hours. We
have been very effective at removing oxides with plasma and even to the
point
of stripping paralyene coating that is 4-5 mil.

Hi Guy! Yes the ROSA (Reduced Oxide Soldering Activation) process would
be
able to restore a HASL surface finish but I probably have the only
remaining functioning system in the industry. Secondly, you need to
process the "restored" pwb within a few hours after ROSA treatment or the
effectiveness is lost . I could restore Lee's pwb solderability but I
couldn't get it shipped to him in time before it would it would
re-oxidized. As several other TechNet contributors have suggested, a very
controlled re-HASL process with the correct flux and cleaning processes
could be a potential option.

Re: [TN] BOARD SOLDERABILITY
Remember that tank we had at ACI that was did electrochemical reduction.
It was a Rockwell invention I think, ROSA? It could restore solderability
to some metals. I don't know how it would get through the HASL.

Subject: [TN] BOARD SOLDERABILITY
One of my colleagues has a HASL finished board, that sat in our stockroom
for ~ 10 years, and of course he want to use them (EOY Billing).
Ran the board through wave soldering, and it did not solder at all. Good
news was that the board was not damaged by the heat - it just was not
solderable. I do not want to use a more active flux since it will be
difficult to clean.
Are there any solutions / processes that can restore board solderability?
Thanks in advance.
