I would agree, they work well. Follow the PEM guidelines. We use both the
SMT and press in styles. Problems only occur when they are not used as
intended.
For press in, develop a keepout zone so the strain does not crack nearby
parts. We also do a strain test on new designs to ensure and document that
there is no issues.
For SMT style, the recommended reflow temperatures are high. If your
design can not handle the recommended reflow temperature make sure you
test the pushout and torque out values for yourself for the reflow profile
used to ensure it meets your requirements.

Always cheaper in the long run to play with a test board and develop some
DFM rules than to experiment with new parts directly on a design.

Re: [TN] PEM (rivets) in PCB

Henry,
Back in a previous life we used them on many boards in telecommunications
systems
both to secure keypads etc to phone boards & module boards to main boards.
They work just fine, yes it can get a little frayed around edges, but we
have never
seen any issues in our product type related to PEMs in boards.
They work very well when installed properly with
proper hole size.
Bob

Subject: [TN] PEM (rivets) in PCB

Is anybody out there aware of any spec/inspection criteria/documentation
on how to specify/design/inspect Pem type fasteners?

We have a design that may require this, but I'm not willing to commit
until I have some more background info. Specifically, is this a normal
process for a board shop? Are there any 'gotcha's'?

Thanks.
