I think it will be machine specific and setup specific (diameter/type of
nozzle), the more free space the better. Depending on machine,
overtravel is sometimes used to prevent bridges when soldering rows of
pins. Another thing to look at is passive orientation w.r.t. the
selective solder nozzle. Parts running parallel with both terminations
potentially reflowing can be washed off whereas on perpendicular
oriented parts only one joint reflows and the part stays in place.

Subject: [TN] Selective Soldering Nozzle Clearance

Greetings,

For anyone who does selective soldering:

I need to design a circuit board that has a few through-hole parts that
will
be soldered using a selective soldering machine, but I haven't found out
exactly which one it is yet (ELSA). Is there a DEFAULT clearance I
should
keep my SMT parts away from those Through-Hole pins, or do I really have
to customize it per machine?

thanks,

Jack (aka "the new guy")
