The Machinery Directive applies to all machinery, "an assembly, fitted with
or intended to be fitted with a drive system other than directly applied
human or animal effort, consisting of linked parts or components, at least
one of which moves, and which are joined together for a specific application
", which is used in the workplace. With increased litigation and record
fines for machinery related accidents the importance of complying with this
mandatory legislation is more critical than ever. The Machinery Directive
was adopted in 1989 and consolidated in 1998. Since the early nineties, a
number of tools have been developed at national and European level by
authorities, the European Commission and different actors to support
implementation of the directive's provisions. Among these tools, European
documents have been produced: firstly, the European standards for which the
directive recognizes an essential role; secondly the Commission's Guidance
documents, which include comments and facts in relation to the directive.
Following the latest revision of the Machinery Directive in 2006, which is
to be applied from 29th December 2009, all interested parties will need to
develop a deep understanding of their new and/or revised duties.

Speakers:

John Colreavy, Health and Safety Authority

John has worked as a safety inspector for the last 26 years. He is the Irish
representative on the EU Machinery Working Group, ADCO and MACHEX committees
.He participates in the NSAI technical committees dealing with gas standards
and lifting equipment. John's talk will cover the topic of legislation and
standards in the area of machinery safety.

David McClean, Compliance Engineering Ireland Ltd

Following ten years experience working on compliance with the
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive, and the Low Voltage Directive
(which is concerned with electrical safety), David joined CEI, where he
specialises in compliance with the Machinery Directive. David's presentation
will focus on the practical implementation of the Machinery Directive,
looking at real life examples and the common problems encountered.

The speakers will be followed by a networking lunch, and a short tour of the
Henkel facility.

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for managers, engineers, quality, and health and
safety staff. It is relevant to all who have a stake in the machinery and
equipment used in their plant or facility. It is not just theory, it's a
practical session on the issues and problems you are likely to encounter.
