I think the electronics industry, and some related industries,
experienced a major paradigm shift with RoHS and REACH legislation. My
perception is that government used to leave it to industry experts to
determine when major sea changes needed to take place, and that there
were enough responsible leaders within the industry who had the
capability and good judgment to recommend change within the industry. I
don't see that any longer. Now I see irresponsible self-serving,
short-sighted elected jackasses forcing unneeded and counterproductive
legislation without performing any due diligence, research, or inquiry
of the industry experts and leaders, and this at a time when the leaders
are at the height of their capability and responsibility.
A paradigm shift is needed to reverse this trend, and I believe it will
take place.

Joe,
I'm crushed. You left off "Dewey"isms.

Paul

Several such shifts come to mind

The PCB

The Transistor

The IC

The Microprocessor

Non volatile memory

SMT

The CSP

The WLP

Lead-free

The current move to 3D

A short list of the big ones there will be more for sure...

Hi Ian,

I think I read this story in a book "Paradigm Shift" in the 1990s.

It was an example of a "Paradigm Shift" and there are other striking
examples in the book.

I wonder what examples of paradigm shifts there are in the electronics
industry.

Oh hell yes

In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control
facility, all
aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air
Defense
Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting
Iranian
airspace.

This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving
them your call sign, transponder code, type of aircraft, and points of
origin and destination.

I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF
Guard
(emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai.
It is too good not to pass along.

[cid:[log in to unmask]]
The conversation went like this...
Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian
airspace. Identify yourself.'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'
Air Defense Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart
our airspace
we will launch interceptor aircraft!'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send
'em
up, I'll wait!'
Air Defense Radar: (no response .... total silence)
