I think the story "The Emperor's New Cloths" by Hans Christian Andersen is a story of a paradigm shift and it is applicable to RoHS.
In my opinion the RoHS naive are running around patting each others backs and thumping their chests on having passed such good legislation when the fact is it is most likely counter productive at every level (causes more, nastier, shifts the type pollution; increases the carbon foot print by using more energy; reduces reliability, increases consumption by shorting field life; targeted the wrong industry, etc).
Joseph Campbell (Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth) would have had something to say about the RoHS myth.
I wish the Legislators of the European Union would read European Literature.
I say this when more than a few friends of mine died of "lead poisoning" ... in Viet Nam.
"Je me souviens"
Well that's my 20¢ worth.
Sincerely,
Paul Reid

I think the electronics industry, and some related industries,
experienced a major paradigm shift with RoHS and REACH legislation. My
perception is that government used to leave it to industry experts to
determine when major sea changes needed to take place, and that there
were enough responsible leaders within the industry who had the
capability and good judgment to recommend change within the industry. I
don't see that any longer. Now I see irresponsible self-serving,
short-sighted elected jackasses forcing unneeded and counterproductive
legislation without performing any due diligence, research, or inquiry
of the industry experts and leaders, and this at a time when the leaders
are at the height of their capability and responsibility.
A paradigm shift is needed to reverse this trend, and I believe it will
take place.

I'm crushed. You left off "Dewey"isms.

Several such shifts come to mind
The PCB
The Transistor
The IC
The Microprocessor
Non volatile memory
SMT
The CSP
The WLP
Lead-free
The current move to 3D
A short list of the big ones there will be more for sure...

Hi Ian,
I think I read this story in a book "Paradigm Shift" in the 1990s.
It was an example of a "Paradigm Shift" and there are other striking
examples in the book.
I wonder what examples of paradigm shifts there are in the electronics
industry.

Oh hell yes
In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control
facility, all
aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air
Defense
Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting
Iranian
airspace.
This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving
them your call sign, transponder code, type of aircraft, and points of
origin and destination.
I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF
Guard
(emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai.
It is too good not to pass along.
[cid:[log in to unmask]]
The conversation went like this...
Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian
airspace. Identify yourself.'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'
Air Defense Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart
our airspace
we will launch interceptor aircraft!'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send
'em
up, I'll wait!'
Air Defense Radar: (no response .... total silence)
