Past life used Oracle ERP system with Agile front-end, but that was for a
billion-dollar company. However, the cost may have been a small bank, was
intended to help world-wide ERP management, easily scalable, with
Sarbanes-Oxley compliance (the more a company makes, the more "they" are
watching...), seem to work pretty well considering the complex environment.

But you are probably looking for a basic MRP system (Manufacturing Resources
Planning)...

There are some entry-level systems that might work well for you (let your
fingers do the walking...); they appear to be inexpensive, but make the
money by charging for user access per year, so look at *total* cost (say
$500 to $1K per simultaneous user, maybe more/less). Even M$ saw the
glitter of hard currency when they bought Great Plains Software, who had an
MRP system (not that great from what I hear, but wasn't at that company long
enough to form educated opinion), now called Microsoft Dynamics.

Someone mentioned the training necessary, very important...

Might suggest getting a book on MRP/ERP, highlight the needs, consider the
wants, and match the system to your requirements and hope to meet
expectations.

Subject: [TN] MRP systems

Hi TechNetters,
Who, out there, is using a Material Management System that they love, that
is working great, and does not break the bank?
I am looking for a way to manage and keep track of all the revisions
interations that products go through, from prototyping, into production, and
then on into all possible revisions.
Something that will work for software and hardware products, components,
stock room, purchasing, accounting...everyone that touches materials.
I just know that this group has some inside knowledge about what works and
what does not work.
Oh yeah, did I mention that the tools must be current and have ongoing
updates?
Thanks,
Barbara
