Bob,

We're using stencils, but that is not the problem. From a processing
standpoint, we're in good shape using ENIG and HASL boards.

I have to convince my customer who specified HASL that ENIG is a better
approach for using fine pitch components on a new design. Being
proactive, if I had a tolerance range of flatness between HASL and ENIG,
that would be perfect.

Lee,

Are you printing solder paste with a stencil?

If you are referring to the relative flatness over the lands I have
experience that printing paste resolves the unevenness of HASL deposits.

I have found HASL as a more robust reflow friendly finish although it
is
more difficult for hand assembly without paste printing.

Subject: [TN] ENIG / HASL CO-PLANARITY

Happy Friday.

Does anyone have a reference on comparing the co-planarity between ENIG
and HASL (SnPb)? I know that ENIG is more planar than HASL, but by how
much (quantifying the argument). I'm anticipating a question from my
customer on why I want to use ENIG instead of HASL for fine pitch
applications.

Thanks.
