Ioan,

I've always used the technique shown in IPC-A-620 section 15.2.1 to make easy connections to a circuit board when not using a connector. For strain relief I might put a wire tie (ty-wrap) around the wire and through a hole or pair of holes in the circuit board.

For soldering the drain (pick-off) wire there are several methods. One method is a heat shrinkable sleeve that contains flux and solder so the whole solder and insulation step is combined into one by using a heat shrink gun. Another method is to lap solder or wrap the drain wire around the braid and hand solder followed by possible cleaning and heat shrink covering. Depending on space and desired connections the drain wire can be led off in either direction, up the wire or towards the end termination.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [TN] Soldering of coax cable on PCB

Dear Technos,

We have this coax cable that is currently connecting to the PCB via the regular connectors,

see http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=1408150-1&RQPN=1408150-1

For various reasons we would rather eliminate the connector and solder the cable directly to the board. What is the good practice in doing that? I mean:

How the cable can be mechanically secured to the board?

How the cable must be prepared (stripped, etc.)

Any other concerns?

Thank you,

Ioan Tempea, ing.
