It is my understanding they are complementary, with 130 more all-encompassing, and 1285 applicable to electronic parts and assemblies. In my experience, 130 is most commonly specified by drawing, with specific sections from 1285 referenced if required, specifically the YYWW date code format and the ESD symbology.

I've been asked if Mil-Std-1285 is a direct replacement for Mil-Std-130? I
know solder, but not marking, labels, etc.
Anybody have thoughts here? Direct replacement? Compliments Mil-Std-130?
Replaces only part of it?
