John,

Although I've been able to stay in the ranks of the employed, I too have a similar home owners insurance issue. Seems I live less than 2000 feet from the ocean and my insurance company refused to renew my insurance. My annual insurance is now over $2200 and I can't see the ocean except from a special spot on my shed's roof in winter when there are no leaves on the trees. Hate to think of the insurance rates of the folks who have waterfront property. The insurance folks are worried about wind damage in the event of a storm. In trying to get new coverage I came across excuse after excuse as to why they couldn't underwrite my house. Now I'm in the "Mass Fair Plan"... Fair my butt!

Wages are down (10% cut), hours are reduced to 36 hours, state sales taxes just went up to 6.25%, health insurance costs are up, dental coverage is more like "denial" coverage and the government is offering "cash for clunkers". Right, with what money? I'll be patching my car into the next century before I can upgrade. I've been fiscally responsible, paid off my house, have $0 balance on my credit cards and don't have all the latest technology toys. Where is my bail-out Mr. Obama?

A grumbling curmudgeon,

Phil

Subject: [TN] Unemployed, try to save money- fire insurance info

I'm staying very busy working to at least save money on insurances and catching up on maintainance on my houses.

I found out that the insurance has been charging almost double because we are not within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant even though the fire department is less than a half mile away. I found out that many of the fire departments stopped using the fire ponds because the algae damages the pumps on the fire trucks. The Insurance sales people are calling to do inspections but are really out to increase your policy. I'll bet they are raising the classifications or will use the information that when you filled out the insurance application and you saw that fire hydrant on the local fire pond you thought you were all set. I wonder what would happen if you had a fire? Would they reduce or deny the claim? I'm having the NH License board check the filing for my current insurance company because they also believe the fire department being that close would drop me from a class 9 to a class 5. The captain of the fire department says we are ISA class 5.
