Just catching up on this discussion.?We have college interns checking for tin 
whiskers on commercial electronics.? I just bought one of these "digital 
microscopes" on E-bay for $40.? For that kind of money how can you go wrong?? 
Well ........

1. The little unit is easy to hook to your computer and the software is pretty 
good for image capture.? There is a good white LED illuminator around the camera 
lens.? I think the application is more for detecting counterfeit money, as the 
little camera does magnify the maximum 230X and take decent pictures, but it 
works best on flat surfaces.? 

2. Nothing works like a microscope stage to smoothly move objects in the X-Y 
directions so you can scan.? There is no Z-axis movement except to bring the 
object closer or further away, The camera goes in and out of focus to drive you 
crazy. 

3. We mounted our $40 scope to our metallurgical microscope and use it that 
way.? It makes the cheapest digital add-on I have seen to an existing optical 
microscope!!!? And you can't beat the price or ease of set-up.?

I have two of these. I never use them for anything. The image quality is 
unsuitable for detecting PCB blemishes. We use Mantis Scopes with 10X 
magnification. We catch everything with that. Different price class of course.?
