Thomas,

I don't know if you can correctly classify waveguide and components as
electrical or electronic assemblies, at least not as far as the definition
that most people use when thinking of electronics. Having said that,
however, I think you can use J-STD-001 and/or IPC-610 to specify what your
final solder joint should look like, i.e. no voids, good wetting, no cold
joints. I would call it out on the drawing. Something to the effect of:
"Solder joints shall exhibit good wetting as defined by J-STD-001, para XYZ"
and so on.

Then I'd give the assemblers and inspectors pertinent illustrations from
IPC-610 and tell them to make it look like the picture.

Or you could just bond the ferrite into the waveguide. This is what we do
for 99.99% of our high power waveguide assemblies.

Subject: [TN] Definition of Electrical and Electronic Assemblies
Importance: High

To TechNet Forum,

Does anyone have a good definition for "Electrical and Electronic
Assemblies"?

As you know, IPC J-STD-001D has a title with "Requirements for Soldered
Electrical and Electronic Assemblies" and NASA-STD-8739.1 has the title
"WORKMANSHIP STANDARD FOR STAKING AND CONFORMAL COATING OF PRINTED
WIRING BOARDS AND ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLIES".

I need to determine if these specifications apply when soldering ferrite
absorbers (mechanical piece parts) to the inside of the RF waveguides
for RF tuning purposes.

Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts on this matter.
