Wayne,
then you must have experienced the law of falling dust under a car.
You lift the car, place secure supports under, crawl under car, rotate 180
degrees to look upwards, got the secure spring in your right hand and lamp
in the other , reaching out a trembling hand to put that darn thing on its
place. Just a millimeter more and then the thing will fit...THEN...not
sooner, nor later...EXACTLY THEN is a microscopic particle falling right
into your staring eye. It has been there for years, just waiting for the
correct time. You make a violent gesture in the direction to your eyes, and
the hand touches a scalpel sharp metal piece. You are now swearing and
crawling back with a speed like a green mamba and when asking friend to find
the timber in your eye, a thought of panic begin to form: the only and one
little secure ring is somewhere on the floor which is covered by 30 years of
oil and debris. And it's Sunday. And you forgot the mobile telephone at
home.
/Inge

Hi Inge!

I am also someone who takes stuff to pieces. You should see the scars on my
knuckles from all of the sheet metal cuts you can get on a car.

Now that you've put your car back together....

Are you absolutely sure the solder joint was bad when it left the line? I
mean, the rest of the joints look just fine, so what is it about that one?
In all liklihood this was wave soldered.

What if the real problem is that too much current is going through that
joint, which is considerably smaller than the adjacent joint on the same
trace? You may have only peeled back the first layer of the onion!

I hate to put doubts in the mind of someone who did an excellent job getting
the thing repaired, but I know you are tough!

Wayne
