Actually sometimes it's not as civilized in Sweden either. A company
close to where I live tried to persuade "good" people to quit (because
they cost more money than the not so experienced ones) but did not
succeed. Then on a big meeting the management presented a new
organization, where the "good" people were not listed. After explaining
the new organization they finished with "And for you who is not listed
on the chart we think you can make a better work in some other company
than our."

Or the Foreign Minister of Sweden who put one of his employees in a
small room with just a table and a phone (a laptop also I guess) but
with no tasks at all (do I need to say the belonged to different
parties?). For several months he (the Minister) turned down every
application for other positions the employee sent in but finally
accepted to send him as consul-general to Hongkong.
The sandpit is not only for three year olds...

Hi, Ken
That is now illegal. There are specific methods of informing survivor
employees AFTER the layoff has occurred. The law is very clear on this.

I once had a manager who came to work dressed in a long black gown,
wearing a black hood and mask, and carrying a scythe. He would walk up
behind the employee to be laid off, tap him/her on the shoulder, and
crook his finger and say, "Your time is up, my friend. Gather together
your personal belongings and come with me".
The day after he was finished laying people off, they fired his ass and
he was escorted out of the building.
They ended up paying umpteen million bucks in the class-action lawsuit
brought about against them for this manager's antics.

One of the worst layoff's I ever went through, even though I didn't get
laid
off, was a big one where HR would get on the PA every half hour or so
and
read off a list of the next terminations. This went on all day, very
nerve
wracking and a VERY long day!
