Hi Bob,
I recall several folks making such comments over time on this forum an
elsewhere. I have personally attempted refrained from making sweeping
statements but I know folks out there with very strong opinions. I like flying on
Boeing planes because I once worked for Boeing and know the quality of the
plane and the evaluation systems (in general) but I fly Airbus when that is
the equipment being used knowing that I am not going to live forever, nor
am I going to live in blind fear either.
I note that Doug added a comment that is important. The military and
aerospace are exempt but the suppliers of the component they use are not and
they are not interested in carrying two inventories for part numbers.
There has been much discussion about the compatibility (or lack thereof)
of tin-lead and lead-free. Werner has mentioned how trying to solve the
problem by reballing may well be taking reliability in the opposite direction
due to the additional high temperature thermal cycles. And tin whiskers? I
note that there are new conferences that are focusing on this topic. The
list goes on...
It is a thorny problem that seems not to have any clean resolution, save,
perhaps, a return to the sanity of science based decision making relative to
electronics manufacturing rather than hasty emotional, poorly thought out
reasons from self serving politicians.
So it goes...
Best wishes
Joe

Joe, several years ago, at PCB West, I attended a session which I
believe was a panel discussion on RoHS topics. A comment was made at
that time about the new Airbus being certified as lead-free and one of
the panel members made the observation that as long as that was the
case, he'd never get on board an Airbus. You were on that panel, and I
was just curious if you remember that.

Thanks Steve
This was both sad event and very sobering.
I recall hearing a few years back of data being presented indicating
that shock and vibration resistance goes down for lead-free solders
over time with use.
Has this been repeated, verified or seen by anyone else?
