I've been around long enough to remember our
Baron Blakeslee vapor degreasers, filled
with the old ozone depleting solvents.

Some of these units were equipped with
ultrasonic transducers in the cool sump, and
sometimes those transducers would fail and
burn right through the sheet steel. Imagine
if that tank had been filled with a flammable
solvent.

I'm not even sure that IPA will cavitate
properly in an ultrasonic tank, but I'm not
about to try it and find out.

In the days before Health and safety rules, I developed with a colleague
a simple demo of the dangers of alcohol,

Take an empty 5 litre (1 gal) poly jug.
Introduce a couple of drops or 3 of IPA Replace cape and shake.
Remove cap and demonstrate now empty container Align container carefully
so base faces aisle between audience seats and open end is facing back
of room.
Stand to one side
Hold flame to base of jug.
Zero point something seconds later:
Ask the people at the back of the hall to return jug.
[Alternatively go outside and do it vertically.] Conclude by saying We
have demonstrated that an empty container contains enough energy to
propel itself 50 feet or so.
A full one contains enough energy to propel an auto 20-30 miles How far
will you be propelled?

Regards

There has been at least one fire in a contamination tester that I know
of for certain. The company in question thereafter decreed that all
flammable solutions and products should be used only in metallic
enclosures because the PVC melted, allowing the burning solution to
spread along the floor, causing considerable collateral damage to the
workshop (I think in millions). I have heard of a possible couple of
other minor cases but nothing that I can quote chapter and verse on.

Remember that the vapours from testers are the IPA/water azeotrope and
not pure IPA. Even the small amount of water, not affecting the flash
point, does reduce the ease with which it burns.

As an ex-manufacturer of contamination testers, we took care in the
design to minimise the risk, although it can never be eliminated. I
emphasise that the one that caused all the damage was not of our
manufacture! :-o

By the same token, the bottle of Laphroaig in the CEO's cocktail cabinet
has an EtOH/water azeotrope over the liquid level, but it has a better
aroma and flavour than the contamination tester solution.
