Millions of pounds of machined parts designed for critical requirements are
cleaned daily with safe aqueous based solutions.
I am still amazed that customers dictate stone age cleaning methods with
hazardous (flammable) solvents and thinks this will suffice for a clean
substrate.
There is still some education to do. My job is safe until retirement for
sure!

John, bottom line, without an IPA designed/ready vapor degreaser already on
your floor you risk a serious fire liability. Any open top ultrasonic unit
will only generate heat and likely ignite after 1-hour. The only saving
grace is that it will evaporate before auto ignition.
Call or email me off-line if you wish to discuss this further.

Hi Bev,

To answer your questions:
Approximately half a dozen of each (screws/washers/ etc.
The qty is for each assembly and they only need to be cleaned before final
assembly, so it will be an ongoing process.
We are trying to clean any contaminants (oils) on the machined parts.

I haven't researched what finish will be on the screws yet.

John

John,
Well part of this (safety considerations) will vary from jurisdiction to
jurisdiction.

Second,
How many screws and how often? Is this once off or will it be repeating?

Third
What is it you are tying to clean off?

Fourth
Are the screws painted, chromated, etc.?

Subject: [TN] IPA o r Methanol in Ultrasonic Cleaner

Technet,

We are being asked by one of our customers to clean some parts (screws,
washers, standoffs, feedthrus) in an ultrasonic cleaner with either
Methanol or IPA (spectroscopic grade).
The time in the ultrasonics could be up to 1 hour.
Does anyone else have experience and recommendations for doing this?
My main concern is safety. What type of room or enclosure do we need
for this?

Thanks,
John Anselmo
